Reporting directly to the Machine Shop Foreperson, the Journeyperson Machinist’s key responsibilities are to Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. He/she must work well independently or in a team environment and provide analyses/recommendations directly to the Machine Shop Foreperson.
Key Functions:
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables or study sample parts to determine the machining operation to be performed, and plan the best sequence of operations
  • Compute dimensions and tolerances and measure and lay out work pieces
  • Set up, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools including computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, boring, planning, drilling, precision grinding and other operations
  • Fit and assemble machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand and power tools
  • Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments
  • May set up and program machine tools for use by machining tool operators
  • Accurate and timely completion of assigned tasks is an integral part of the work
  • Record hours and materials on time cards to satisfy QA requirements
  • Comply with company safety policies
  • Relate concerns and deficiencies to supervisor
  • Encourage and instruct apprentices
  • Other duties within the incumbent’s capabilities as required
Education, Skills and Requirements:
  • Offshore BST training would be an asset
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in the marine environment
  • Completion of 7200 hour Machinist Program
  • Red Seal Journeyperson Machinist certification
  • Be able to work shift work and overtime as required
  • Be able to pay attention to detail
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Marine experience would be an asset
